Up until this week, I was involved in an effort within Iconixx to create a new kind of "share and collaborate" intranet community site. Before I start with my wish list, let me just say I am quite happy and excited to now have access to the e.Laborate BSG Alliance Hub and its capabilities, because it is way better than we planned for our first phase prototype. :) Now, to the point...
I would like to get some reactions to what some consider "wish list" features, but I consider hard requirements. I am more than just curious, both as to whether these are being done or sought after or considered silly fluff, and as to how these are or can be done with the e.Laborate Hub or with add-on/over toolsets.
Thanks in advance for your time in reading and considering this "wish list". :)
A pie-in-the-sky goal of mine is to build a knowledgebase that benefits the on-site consultant who is working 60+ hour weeks and simply does NOT have time to go searching for, or read through all the "good" postings each week, much less daily. To do that, I suggest that our SITE needs an emailing application that respects a participant's Profile choice to ONLY select items that have been Reviewed and Flagged by others of high credibility, as being "5 Star" or "Must See" for the Skillset or interest group member. The default profile setting would be to notify/invite people to see new items that are "4 Star" or "Very good", because we hope that the vast majority of our consulting Team are at least "very busy" and do not need to be interrupted unless others with high credibility have decided an item is "worth it" and should be seen. Now the key to this working, in my mind, is that the Challenge and Fun and Quality are all integrally necessary and co-dependent, and will come out of the vibrancy of participating with accountability - i.e what you do, and the quality of what you do, WILL BE NOTICED and affect your reputation and success.
Nutshell: The "wish" is for some way to facilitate the evolution (accumulation) of a credibility rating (i.e. Power) for a person (Player) by their contributions to the community, both in originating content, and in accurately reviewing and rating content, for the benefit of others, in kind.
Rather than include and duplicate content in another thread, I'll put a link to it for the terms/definitions used in the "requirements" section below. You may not need it, but if you want to know exactly what is meant by "Toys" and "Bouys", etc., then check it out at http://www.bsgalliance.com/convs/show/3946-eim-sfm-skillset-collaboration-site-ex-iconixx-define?rs=y .
Below is an excerpt from our now aborted Iconixx requirements discussions for building a collaboration SITE:
Player Resources
The most valuable and shareable resource is our Team members. A member participation rating system should both reward quality and quantity of participation, and light-heartedly encourage participation in much the same way the YMCA does with their motto - "Begin. Become. Belong."
The basis for this approach is the realization that truly creative and productive people are still children at heart, and they are more energized by that inner child when the tools they use are called "Toys" and make their day more fun, ideally turning work into play as much as possible.
Player Profiles should have options defined using radio buttons to select interest levels in Skillsets, People, Projects, and Toys (from hard Tools to soft Ideas to "toy with"), etc.
Players will gain and/or lose power based on their participation (original contributions and replies) and the reviews of their peers. A set of rules and mechanisms (e.g. power rating, power meter, power menu) for player to build and use power should resemble that common in many role playing games. Players should then be able to challenge each other and even combine their powerful opinions with those of other players in defending a priority or best practice or tool choice opinion, etc. Maybe, something like Linden bucks currency (maybe even actual Linden bucks) would be earned for each contribution to the SITE, more for well reviewed Toys than for simpler Buoys (reviews and guides to others to good Toys) or mere Flags, etc. e.g. Leading a move to successfully change a priority should pay off well. Posting a negative review and having it successfully countered by 2 others, should cost some credibility power.
The Player Power Products are:
Star Rated Reviews - A Player can write a review of any SITE Item, ascribe to it a "Star Rating" of from 0 to 5 stars (Icons common to many websites), meaning:
- 0 - Stars: Should not even be on the SITE. A waste of time and space at best.
- 1 * Stars: Might be useful to someone
- 2 ** Stars: Needs to be on the SITE. Either of limited appeal, or needs work.
- 3 *** Stars: Solid, useful according the Item's title. Interest based on Title is met.
- 4 **** Stars: Anyone with ties to associated Skillset(s) should review this. (notified?)
- 5 *****Stars: Every DI Consultant Needs to Review this. (should send emails out)
Player Flags - A Green, Red, or Yellow flag icon, (linked to a review of a review,) may be placed on any Item Review per the following:
Green - Good Review; I agree (no additional review text is required, unless placed after a Red Flag, to counter it.)
Yellow - Counter Review; I do not fully agree (additional review text is required.)
Red - Reject Review. 2 Red flags automatically hides a review. (additional review text is required.)

A knowledgebase of solutions/problem resolution should probably be a top level, main "Blog" I guess. We should be able to post a Blog entry of a significant problem, and then later, its resolution, with discussion on the problem ad resolution being in the related "conversation". I would like to see one "knowledgebase" of the problems/resolutions that looks more like a Wikipedia Blog, with links both ways to conversations that happen(ed) in understanding the problem and in formulating the solution. That way a search on key words might hit a rejected solution in the conversation, that then leads to the preferred solution in the Blog (= SUCCESSFUL! use of our SITE.), while leaving a clean problem/solution educational Blog useful for efficient learning. Here is a place where I should explain the value added by my "wish list" feature of being able to attach Reviews and Flags to items like this.
