What are we looking for in an Apps Team Engineer? belongs to Apps Team , BSG Alliance Recruiting ![]() by Brittain on Apr 03, 2008 - 12:29 PM read 251 times |
I've been asked several times what qualities we value here on Apps Team, so here's the definitive answer. Obviously, many of these qualities are influenced by my professional orientation, so here's some thoughts on that.
Questions and comments welcome.
Must Haves
- Commercial orientation. We build products that drive revenue. All decisions support this outcome, particularly over any "engineering purity" outcome. For the record, we believe writing successful, well-engineered products is not only possible, but is our norm.
- Technology agnostic. We use the best tool for the job, always. Yes, the word "best" is very overloaded in this sense, but in practice we use a variety of tools for a variety of purposes and our engineers consider this a good thing.
- Reliable. We operate relatively democratically and often independently. A "total solution" usually involves successful completion of many interlocking tasks; therefore, we require each engineer complete their task (or work with the team on plan adjustments).
- Flexible / Adaptable / Versatile. Changing priorities, new products, new technologies, alternative processes ... all these things influence our day-to-day activities. Individuals who cannot easily adapt and incorporate change will suffer under these conditions.
- Driven. Individual team members of all experience levels often must take the initiative to start (or finish) a task, introduce a new solution, or otherwise show ownership and resourcefulness.
